Holocaust Memorial Museum hosts book club series

The Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio Book Club, HMMSA Reads, had its first meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5. The group met in the Beldon Library at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Campus of the Jewish Community and enjoyed refreshments and conversation among friends and new acquaintances.

The book Sala’s Gift will be discussed at the next HMMSA Reads event on December 5. The event is free and open to the community.

Sixteen community members, a volunteer, and HMMSA Education Coordinator Julie Tzucker discussed the book The Diary of Mary Berg: Growing Up in the Warsaw Ghetto, a nonfiction first-hand account of the conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto and beyond. The group was diverse and different viewpoints were offered throughout the session. Conversation varied from discussion of the book to personal experiences, how to engage young people in this subject area, and how to prevent this kind of tragedy in modern-day America and the world.

Several participants felt a personal connection to the book while others deepened their interest in learning about the Holocaust. HMMSA Reads will have its next meeting on Thursday, Dec 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the Beldon Library. The book to be discussed will be Sala’s Gift by Ann Kirschner. This book will be read in conjunction with an exhibit at the seventh annual Holocaust Learn and Remember, a program of the San Antonio Public Library.
