JCC school for young children focuses on community

Children at the JCC School for Young Children enjoyed a community Kabbalat Shabbat with Rabbi Abraham and puppet props.

At the Barshop Jewish Community Center, community is their middle name. It is who they are and what they do. This year, the School for Young Children (SFYC) is focusing on Kehillah or Community within the school and within the San Antonio Jewish Community. Once a month the entire school gathers for Community Shabbat inviting families and friends of students to join in.

This year the school is reaching out to local Rabbi’s and other educators in the San Antonio Jewish Community to lead these special gatherings. In June Leah Apothaker, Director of Congregational Learning at Temple Beth El, lead the first ECD Community Shabbat. In July the children at the SFYC joined with the children of the JCC summer camp to celebrate Shabbat as a community led by Rachel Henson the JCC Summer Camp Director. In August Rabbi Abraham from Congregation Agudas Achim lead with Shabbat puppets.

“We believe it is important for us to build a community of parents who come together from many backgrounds to share our lives, our challenges, and our dreams for our children.  This is a very special time in a child’s life and we are happy to be part of it!” said Lisa Guerrero, Early Childhood Director.
