JCC welcoming two authors this fall

The Barshop JCC is partnering with the Twig Book Shop to bring author R.J. Palacio to the JCC Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m. The event is free to attend and is open to all ages.

Palacio, the author the number one New York Times bestseller, Wonder, will discuss her latest book, White Bird: A Wonder Story, a graphic novel about the power of kindness and unrelenting courage in a time of war. As a sort of follow-up to Wonder, White Bird tells the story of Julian, a bully, who discovers the moving and powerful tale of his grandmother who was hidden from the Nazis as a young Jewish girl in occupied France during the Second World War. White Bird is being called “rich and memorable” by the New York Times and “a beautiful, funny and sometimes sob-making story of quiet transformation,” by The Wall Street Journal.

Previously appearing at the JCC in 2015, author Carla Naumburg will return to the JCC on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7:00 p.m. as part of a JCC Author & Speaker series collaboration with Alamo City Mom Blog. Naumburg will discuss her new book How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t with Your Kids: A Practical Guide to Becoming a Calmer, Happier Parent, a simple, accessible, and humorous guide to more effective and mindful parenting. Rebecca Schrag Hershberg, author of The Tantrum Survival Guide says “By the end [of Naumburg’s book] not only are you laughing out loud, but you’ve gained a sense of self-compassion and a concrete action plan.”

Tickets for the Naumburg event are $9.00 (online) or $10.00 (phone/in-person) in advance, or $11.00 at the door.

The Twig Book Shop, the official book seller for the 2019-20 Author Series, will be selling books at the JCC for both events. Books may also be purchased in advance at the Twig Book Shop. Both authors will be signing books at the conclusion of their presentations.
