Virtual Open House shares summer opportunities with parents

The Jewish Community is offering a variety of activities for children this summer.

Children who attend summer camp and organized summer programs are often heard using the phrase “10 for 2” which refers to the ten months children live their “normal” daily lives followed by two months of summer vacation.

This year, however, has been anything but the normal ten routine months of the academic school year. Our children have been living through a global pandemic that has sheltered them in place and isolated them from any sense of normal. School days have been online, with the children often wearing their PJs to “class”. Classwork has been a never-ending list of homework assignments. And many parents have mutated into surrogate teachers for a never-requested version of homeschool that would fail to meet any standards of academic accreditation!

In response to this, here in San Antonio, Jewish community organizations are planning to regain some sense of normalcy for our children’s summer vacation. The Federation convened a meeting of our local organizations who program for school-age children on Monday, May 18. A virtual open house informed our community parents about what opportunities will exist for their children for the upcoming summer.

Jewish Family Service CEO, Talli Goldman-Dolge, M.S., welcomed parents to the program with a message. Representatives from the Barshop JCC, Chabad Center for Jewish Life & Learning, Congregation Rodfei Sholom, Temple Beth-El, Temple Chai, URJ Greene Family Camp and Camp Young Judaea highlighted their summer programs for parents and shared their preparations for keeping children safe.

Each summer, J-Camp aims to help each camper develop new skills and a greater appreciation of his/her capabilities – and this summer is no exception. We are excited about providing crafts, sports, swimming, and our other programming in new ways, but with the same J-Camp spirit.
