The HMMSA Reads book club explores the themes of memory and trauma
By Julie Tzucker, Federation Director of Jewish Learning & Engagement
The HMMSA Reads book club met virtually on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for an enlightening lecture with Trinity Professor and author of Holocaust Graphic Narratives, Dr. Victoria Aarons. Holocaust Graphic Narratives offers a deeper look into the wealth of graphic novels and narratives written about the Holocaust after 1945. Aarons shared haunting images and explained their symbolism and importance, centering around the theme of memory and trauma. The group further discussed other traumatic events in history, and the future of Holocaust memory and education. The book club ended with a question and a challenge, “How can we carry the survivors’ memories forward in a meaningful way?”
The next HMMSA Reads book club will meet virtually on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the book 94 Maidens, with author, Rhonda Fink-Whitman. The Hadassah Chapter of San Antonio will be co-hosting this program.
