Hillel International, the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, announced the 20 members of the 2021-2022 Hillel International Student Cabinet. The cabinet shares their advice, opinions, and perspectives with Hillel International’s leadership to help Hillels engage Jewish college students everywhere. Hillel San Antonio is so proud that Octavio Viramontes was chosen to represent Jewish students throughout the globe. The members comprise a diverse cohort and were selected to represent a wide range of Jewish backgrounds and interests. They hail from colleges and universities of varying sizes and are engaged in many different areas of study. The members were selected through a highly competitive process.
Octavio Viramontes, or “Tavo” as most people call him, is a junior at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) where he is majoring in Civil Engineering, and minoring in Business Administration. He was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and later moved to San Antonio. As a freshman at UTSA, he sought to find a community where he could help enhance and enrich campus life. He became involved in several organizations involving his diverse interests such as the triathalon and swimming team, engineering club, AEPi and Hillel, where his passion for his Jewish heritage and love of Israel grew. Currently, Tavo serves as the President of Hillel San Antonio and is a member of Hillel International’s Student Advisory Cohort for Israel. Additionally, he is an active member of UTSA’s Sustainability Office and part of the Multicultural Advisory Council of UTSA, where he represents the Jewish community on campus.
