HMMSA Book Club Meets in June

May 14, 2021

On June 3rd the HMMSA Reads Book Club will gather virtually at 5:30 p.m. to discuss Alice Hoffman’s, The World That We Knew.

The novel follows the story of three Jewish women as they try to survive in Nazi-controlled Europe. The story begins i1941 Berlin, where Hanni Kohn is struggling to find a way to save her daughter, Lea, from the evil powers surrounding them. She reaches out to a rabbi for help but is turned away by the rabbi’s wife. However, the rabbi’s daughter, Ettie, offers to create a mystical Jewish creature, Ava, which is sworn to protect Lea throughout her travels. Forever entwined, Lea and Ettie must embark on their own journey of survival.

Lea and Ava travel from Paris to a school in a mountaintop village where three thousand Jews were saved. Ettie flees with her sister Marta and must determine how to live after experiencing heartbreak. She remains in hiding waiting to grow into the fighter she is destined to become. Magical realism blends with folklore and mysticism in this unique story of survival and a mother’s love for her daughter.

Please join us! Even if you have not finished reading the book, we welcome all to participate. We hope to see familiar and new faces on June 3rd!
