Patches event shines spotlight on the experience of those with mental and physical disabilities

On Sunday, November 15th, the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio will be partnering with Texas Advocates and the San Antonio League of Self-Advocates (SALSA) to host the annual program Patches: Others Deemed Dangerous or Inferior event from 1-3 pm. This event highlights lesser known groups who were victimized by the Nazis during the Holocaust in order to broaden public understanding of this terrible event. This year the event will feature the experience of those with mental and physical disabilities and discussion of the Nazi “T4” euthanasia program.
The event will include a lecture by University of Incarnate Word professor and chair of the UIW Sociology and Criminal Justice departments, Dr. Roger Barnes. Dr. Barnes has been teaching at UIW since 1991 and is a long-time supporter of the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio. His lecture will discuss Nazi programs that targeted the mentally and physically disabled.

Following Dr. Barnes’ lecture, the museum will host a brief discussion and take questions about the film. The final portion of the event will feature guest speakers from Texas Advocates and the San Antonio League of Self-Advocates (SALSA) discussing current issues facing people with disabilities in Texas.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 health crisis this event will be hosted virtually on Zoom this year. This event is supported by the generosity of museum donors and will be offered free of charge. Donations to the HMMSA or Texas Advocates are encouraged.
