SAJSS bringing light to seniors

San Antonio Jewish Senior Services (SAJSS) has been working to bring light and joy to our community’s older adults “one call and one challah at a time.”  Since SAJSS is not doing in-person programming due to the pandemic, they devised a new way to connect with and support seniors in our community.

Each week, since the beginning of April, SAJSS has purchased, and dedicated volunteers have helped deliver, an average of 35-40 challahs on a rotating basis to older adults in our community.  Once a month, volunteers also deliver challahs to approximately 75 Jewish seniors that live in independent and assisted living facilities.

In addition to challahs, SAJSS delivered more than 40 Seder meals, including matzah and grape juice, on Passover, as well as provided a robust gift bag to more than 300 households for the High Holidays.  SAJSS is coordinating the delivery of sponsored Thanksgiving meals to those who are alone or in need, and will include a little surprise for those receiving deliveries as Hanukkah approaches.

The list of recipient households has grown exponentially, as many people in our community have contacted SAJSS with additional names to serve.  If you know of an older adult who would like a challah, please contact sandraw@sajss.com,

Organizers say they are so thankful that SAJSS can reach so many older adults and they look forward to continuing this connection and enriching Shabbat (and the holidays) for older adults in our community.
