Why I Give: Perry Wulfe
May 1, 2023
Perry Wulfe has been volunteering with SAJSS since 1982 when he received a call from his stockbroker, Gerry Cohn, who was President of Golden Manor Jewish Home for the Aged at that time. Perry had just completed his master’s program and passed his CPA exam. Gerry told Perry that Golden Manor needed help setting up some books. Perry says that he agreed to help but didn’t know what he was getting himself into.
Perry quickly started to clean up the financials and hired a bookkeeper. In short, Perry put Golden Manor on clear financial footing.
Perry was then appointed to the Board and was soon elected Treasurer. Perry said, “I think I was Treasurer for 23 years (I did get time off to get married!).” The board then proceeded to elect him as President. Perry recalls that when the leadership made decisions at Golden Manor, people’s lives depended on them.
Even after the financial challenges that caused Perry and the rest of the board to make the difficult decision to sell the nursing home in 2008, Perry remained active, staying involved with San Antonio Jewish Senior Services (SAJSS). “I think the reason that this is so important to me is that, in most charitable organizations, you can possibly help someone, but at SAJSS, what we do is really impactful, and actually makes a difference in someone’s life,” Perry remarked.
“It is precisely because of the difference I know SAJSS makes that I continue to volunteer my time and am a LIFE & LEGACY donor. I want to ensure that SAJSS remains financially and programmatically strong so that it will exist for future generations of older adults and their families in the San Antonio Jewish community.”
