Barshop JCC Welcomes Shaliach to Summer J-Camp
June 15, 2021
The Barshop JCC Summer J-Camp will welcome Mr. Or Ashkenazi as the shaliach, or emissary, to provide a daily infusion of Israeli culture and history to camp participants. Selected and trained through the Jewish Agency, shlichim provide a connection to Israel through placements worldwide in communities, synagogues, day and overnight camps, and at universities.
Due to Covid-19, Mr. Ashkenazi was not able to travel outside Israel last summer but he requested that his application for the Barshop JCC remain active for consideration for this year. He will receive home hospitality for his nine-week commitment in San Antonio.
Mr. Ashkenazi, 22, is from Ashdod, Israel, and has completed his service in the Israel Defense Forces. His experience working with children includes with Perach Scholarships, mentoring school-aged children, and in various community tutoring programs. A passionate sports fan, he roots for the Arsenal Football Club in the Premier League and also plays guitar and ukulele during free time from working in Tel-Aviv and ushering at the Cameri Theater.
