Mitzvah Moment at the San Antonio Food Bank

August 3, 2021

As part of a new tradition, Jewish Federation San Antonio staff and board members will come together once a quarter to volunteer in the community. The first “Mitzvah Moment” took place mid-June at the San Antonio Food Bank. JFSA staff and board members arrived and learned
about the Food Bank in an initial orientation. The San Antonio Food Bank serves 16 counties and feeds 120,000 food insecure individuals, every week. Federation representatives volunteered in the warehouse and worked on the “Backpack Program.” This initiative supplies easy to prepare food for weekends and holidays to, “children who are identified by caring teachers and staff members as showing signs that he or she is living in a high hunger-risk situation.” For over 3 hours, volunteers worked together to assemble an astounding 2,600 “backpacks!” Federation is thankful to all those who volunteered and did a mitzvah for the community.
