Our security is non-negotiable: advocating in Washington, D.C.

JUNE 27, 2025 — San Antonio was represented this week in Washington, D.C. as Craig Berkowitch and Arie Lasky joined representatives from Jewish Federations all over the country to advocate for safety nationwide and in Israel. The trip, which took place on June 25 and 26th, was organized by the Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Attendees included representatives from nearly 100 Jewish communities nationwide, and more than 30 Jewish organizations.

“In light of recent antisemitic incidents in San Antonio, we must raise our voices as a united community,” said Craig Berkowitch. “It’s our collective responsibility to push our elected officials to support public-private partnerships that secure Jewish life in San Antonio and throughout this great nation.  Now more than ever.”

During the visit, Jewish leaders called for a $1 billion increase to the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, federal support to offset protection costs for Jewish institutions, enhanced Homeland Security and FBI funding, increased federal assistance to local law enforcement, regulation and accountability for hate speech on social media platforms, and aggressive enforcement and prosecution of hate crimes.

The trip comes at a time when Jewish communities across the nation are facing a sharp rise in threats due to geopolitical tensions rising in Israel.  “Our safety is not optional, it’s not negotiable. It cannot wait,” said Berkowitch.  “While Jewish life, values, and lives continue to flourish in the Alamo City, we must ensure they do so safely and securely. We will not be deterred.”
