Dear Friends, As we turn to Parashat Bereishit this Shabbat, we find ourselves at a moment of new beginnings, both in our Torah cycle and in our beloved community. The opening words of Genesis, “In the beginning…” remind us of the infinite potential that lies in every fresh start.

This week, we share a sincere todah rabah, rabah – a thank you many times over – to our outgoing CEO, Nammie Ichilov, whose dedication and vision has guided our Federation through five years of growth and challenges. Like the divine acts of creation described in the Book of Genesis, Nammie’s tenure has been marked by bringing light from the darkness of crisis, order from the disorder of a global pandemic, and nurturing the seeds of community that have blossomed under his care. We express our deepest gratitude for his service and the lasting impact he has made on our San Antonio Jewish community.

As we transition to a new chapter, we are reminded of the cyclical nature of leadership, much like the rhythm of creation itself. Just as the first Shabbat in Bereishit is marked by both an ending and a beginning, so too does this moment in our community’s journey. We are excited to announce that Randy Czarlinsky will be stepping into the role of Interim CEO, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a new perspective to our Federation.

Randy’s appointment echoes the spirit of Bereishit – a time of potential, creativity, and renewal. We look forward to the wisdom and ideas he will bring to our community. Randy will be introducing himself in next Friday’s column, which will coincide with his first day as our new Interim CEO on November 1st . I hope you will join me in welcoming Randy to our community.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Lauren Stanley, Ad Hoc Search Committee Chair, and her committee who worked tirelessly to select the right candidate. Their diligence and commitment in bringing Randy to the Jewish Federation of San Antonio reflect the same care and intentionality that have become synonymous with our Jewish Federation.

As we embark on this new beginning, let us draw inspiration from the first parashah of our Torah. Just as each day of creation built upon the previous one, may we continue to build upon the strong foundation laid before us. Let us approach this transition with the same sense of wonder and possibility that permeates the story of creation.

In the spirit of Bereishit, may we all be blessed with the wisdom to recognize the divine spark in every new beginning, the strength to shape our community with love and purpose, and the joy of creating a vibrant Jewish future together.

Shabbat Shalom,

James Rosenblatt
Board Chair, Jewish Federation of San Antonio
